May I suggest that there were two Prodical Sons. The first Prodical Son was obvious to all in his riotus living and obvious sins.
The second Prodical Son was less obvious. While he obeyed his father, he did so with a distant, begrudging, self-righteous, self-pitying, virtue signaling, legalistic, unloving, uncompassionate heart and mind. When his brother returned, there was an outpuring of resentment, jealosy, desires, and even more self pity, crying out ‘what about me?’, similar to Judas Iscariat. This form of Prodical Son, is far more dangerous, as it can remain hidden for long periods of time, deceiving the Prodical Son, causing or contributing to his ignoring the growing rot and missed blessings & opportunities, until he is in full shock, too late, when he hears, “I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.”, or similar, per Mat. 7:21-23, 25:12, Luke 13:27, etc.
